Some folks say luck comes and goes, but Elminster—the halfling, not the wizard—seems to have been born with a permanent seat at Lady Tymora’s table. His mother was heavy with him while traveling the treacherous road between Luskan and Neverwinter, escorting parchments meant for Lord Neverember. Bandits struck like wolves with tax bills, and all seemed lost until the air shimmered and down drifted the Old Sage himself. Elminster Aumar—pipe smoking, scruffy, and impossibly casual—flicked a single pinky. Every bandit collapsed as though remembering a dream they’d rather finish. Grateful and awestruck, his mother named her son after the wizard on the spot. Growing up, the halfling Elminster inherited two things: an ancestral tie to the nobility of Myth Drannor and a streak of outrageous fortune. Locks seemed eager to open for him. Dice begged to land kindly. Trouble found him, yes, but always politely. Now he wanders Neverwinter’s alleys, taverns, and rooftops, spinning tales of the Sage who saved his life before he was born and living a life just crooked enough for Tymora to keep smiling his way.
